itfc subtitles A Christmas Carol - Disney's first 3D film accessible to the deaf or hard of hearing

~ 3D subtitled screenings to be played across the UK ~

itfc, a leading London-based media access services provider, has worked on the subtitles for Disney's A Christmas Carol - the first ever 3D film made accessible in the UK to people that are deaf or hard of hearing. The 3D subtitled screenings will run from Sunday 29 November across 60 Vue cinema sites, with Cineworld sites to follow. In order to provide the access, itfc's subtitles were taken in their 2D format and rendered for 3D, which completed the experience for viewers.

Starring Jim Carrey as Ebenezer Scrooge, this Disney re-make of Dickens' Christmas classic has been brought to life in full 3D glory. The 3D elements are complemented by a world of sound, ranging from the eerie tolling of bells and clanking of ghostly chains to the joyful singing of carols as Christmas Day dawns on the reformed Scrooge.

"Writing about sound was a technique employed by Dickens to immerse his readers in his imagined world, so conveying a world of sound through subtitling was a key element to this project," said Caroline Lomas, subtitling coordinator at itfc. "It was a challenging task as precise timing and careful editing played a crucial part in successfully combining words and images. With a 3D film, it's important to let the pictures be free to work their magic and tell the story."

As well as subtitling, itfc completed audio description, which took 20 hours and consisted of over 6100 words. The facility has also worked on other Disney 3D films including UP (3D), Bolt (3D) and the re-release of Toy Story and Toy Story 2.
