SIS Live provides coverage of media launch event for brand new Yas Marina circuit
Langley, United Kingdom, 10th November 2009: SIS LIVE, Europe's largest outside broadcast (OB) and uplink supplier, provided a number of on-board special cameras as well as other ENG cameras for the media launch event for the brand new Yas Marina circuit in Abu Dhabi. The stunning new venue played host to the Formula One Eithad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on Sunday 1st November.
SIS LIVE provided a one-stop shop for the circuit operator, Abu Dhabi Motorsports Management (ADMM), including recording footage of reporters being driven round the Yas Marina circuit in specially adapted F1 cars. ADMM held a two-day media launch event for the brand new circuit, with reporters from the world's broadcasters being taken around the track by David Coulthard, Martin Brundle, Bruno Senna and Jamie Campbell Walters in two specially-adapted two-seater F1 cars. SIS LIVE provided seven ENG crews and a total of 16 on-board cameras to shoot the material. In addition, SIS LIVE shot promotional footage of the circuit for ADMM.
David Meynell, Managing Director, SIS LIVE, says: "The new Abu Dhabi Grand Prix circuit is a fantastic setting to host the culmination of the season and we are delighted that SIS LIVE was chosen to provide our on-board expertise for their media launch event. SIS LIVE is one of the world's the leading suppliers of specialist cameras for sports and other events and we were able to bring that knowledge and experience with us to Abu Dhabi."
SIS LIVE provided a one-stop shop for the whole coverage requirement, including logistics planning, liaison with the car manufacturer, kit supply, staffing, freight, post production and playout.
SIS LIVE's Special Cameras division designed and built all the on-board cameras and recorders, and the special camera mountings for the cars. Each F1 car was fitted with up to four on-board cameras. One was mounted on the T-bar across the top of the air intake, offering a forward shot. A second was mounted on the side of the cockpit looking back at the driver and passenger. A third was mounted besides the driver, looking forward. They could also be mounted on the front wing and another on the rear wing. In addition, on-board cameras were fitted to two road sports cars that raced round the track with the F1 cars, providing additional coverage.
SIS LIVE Engineering Manager Alan Lythaby, who was responsible for the Abu Dhabi event, says: "The circuit looked absolutely stunning. Six month's ago it was piles of sand and the world's biggest building site. Now all the grandstands are finished, the setting is amazing and the track itself is fantastic. We shot during daylight and then at sunset and at night. The Grand Prix will start in daylight and finish at night under lights and the whole circuit is magnificently illuminated. The changes in light gave us some challenges, not least capturing the sunset, which happens very quickly and varies depending on the amount of dust in the air. But everything went really well and everyone was very happy."
During the Grand Prix weekend, SIS LIVE provided all the facilities for BBC Sport's TV production, including editing, wireless cameras, on-site production facilities and satellite links, as well as all the supporting technical staff for TV, internet and interactive platforms.
