Since its launch the Red camera has had a huge impact in the camera market. Firstly, it continues the acceleration towards the extensive use of digital cameras in all genre's, but the Red essentially provides a product at a fraction of the price tag of the traditional players offerings.
From an insurance point of view, the hardware of the Red camera does not bring with it any complications with any accidental damage or theft claims being dealt with in the usual manner.
However, there have been a number of queries from UK Screen Members as to whether the use of third party software or SD cards would affect a claim in respect of reshoots following damage to the content. The query has arisen presumably due to the considerable cost difference between a non-approved card, which prices up substantially less than the approved Red SD cards.
Whilst at present there is no specific insurance requirement to use the manufacturers recommended cards, our advice would always be to use the Red approved products, as these are compatability tested for the camera and would vastly reduce the chances of losing any data.
The same can be said for the use of third party data storage & editing software as our advice would again be to use Red "approved & tested" software. Naturally, the software & hardware need to be talking to each other and using third party software could potentially throw up difficulties.
In terms of an insurance claim, Media loss adjuster Ian McDonald comments "That any insurance wording or requirement would only become relevant if Red specify that third party cards or software are not recommended as they could cause issues that result in an insurable loss, such as loss of content".
