MAC recognises VFX Skills Shortage

Last month we were awaiting publication of the MAC (Migration Advisory Committee) Report to see whether they would support our submission and recommend to Government that the current shortage occupation lists be updated to include specified visual effects roles.

We are delighted that MAC has recommended the inclusion of 18 roles within visual effects and 2D/3D computer animation for film, television or video games.

Over the last five years the UK's visual effects sector has experienced rapid and substantial growth, bringing with it a dramatic increase in demand for highly skilled artists. But there is a considerable global skills shortage in this area and companies are out of necessity recruiting from all over the world to meet that demand for these specialised technical roles.

The recommendation by MAC to add visual effects roles has been welcomed by our members and if the recommendations are adopted by Government will ensure that the UK can continue to attract experienced talent outside the EU and as such retain its competitiveness in the global market.
