Autodesk at the VisMasters Design, Modeling and Visualization Conference 2008

Conference adds BIM Sessions, Highlights the Convergence of Design and Visualisation

Autodesk is sponsoring the VisMasters Design, Modeling and Visualization Conference (DMVC), being held in Boston on 12-13 May. Now in its third year, the DMVC has expanded its offerings to include sessions for architectural design professionals, in addition to its programme for architectural visualisation artists.

Phil Bernstein, Autodesk's vice president of industry strategy and relations, architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) solutions, will give the DMVC keynote presentation, titled "Evolution or revolution and the convergence of an industry". Autodesk will also offer two additional seminars at the event - "Good to great -- rendering BIM projects in 3ds Max Design" and "Digital cities and the future of design visualisation".

"We have added building information modelling sessions to the DMVC event schedule this year because of its important link to the visualisation process," explained Jeff Mottle, business development manager for the conference. "As technology advances, we are seeing a convergence of the design and visualisation fields. Visualisation is now an integral part of the design process that is necessary to fully deliver on the promise of BIM. Not only does it communicate the final product, it also helps to explore and validate concepts in all phases of design."

Bernstein's keynote address will describe the convergence of building information modelling (BIM) and visualisation, two critical technologies in the AEC industry. After a brief historical review of the development of each technology, he will examine the critical emerging relationships between design representation platforms supported by BIM and the importance of visualisation to BIM. Key trends and their implications for the design process will also be investigated, and future scenarios will be projected.

In addition, DMVC attendees can earn one American Institute of Architects (AIA) credit for attending Autodesk's "Good to great -- rendering BIM projects in 3ds Max Design" session. This session is designed for users of Revit Architecture software who want to take their rendering skills to the next level using advanced visualisation techniques. The presentation will cover the process for producing high-quality still images from an information model. This includes the creation of realistic-looking materials, advanced illumination techniques, and accurate compositions in a project presentation. The session will also examine how to produce project files for an effective design visualisation workflow between Revit Architecture and 3ds Max Design.

Autodesk's third session, "Digital cities and the future of design Visualisation", will be a panel discussion presented by Autodesk's Doug Eberhard, Parsons Brinckerhoff's Tim Case and GMJ Design Ltd.'s Didier Madoc Jones. This discussion will explore the concept of digital cities and how the convergence of BIM, design visualisation, geospatial, simulation and collaboration technologies are creating a new way to visualise, analyse, communicate and sell projects on a macro scale. The presenters will show real world examples of how 3D models are being created and how they could be shared within a larger community or city context. They will also demonstrate how digital cities are helping to create a new market opportunity for the design visualisation community, while offering greater digital sustainability in the future.
