Steve Norris entered the film industry in 1977 with the Rank Organisation at Pinewood Studios, and in 1979, joined Warner Bros' European Production Department. In 1982, he moved to California to become Assistant Studio Controller for Warners, and in 1983 was appointed to Warner Bros' World Wide Production Group.
David Puttnam invited him to return to the UK to join Enigma Productions in 1984, running the day to day affairs of the company during the production of films including The Killing Fields, The Mission and Defence of the Realm.
In 1986 he joined Columbia Pictures as Vice President and Executive Assistant to the Chairman and CEO. He returned to the UK in the spring of 1988 with David Puttnam to re-form Enigma Productions, subsequently producing the films Memphis Belle, Meeting Venus, Being Human, The Burning Season (winning the Golden Globe for Best Film and TV) and War of the Buttons.
He then produced Robert Lepage's award winning Le Confessionnal for the European Co-Production Fund and Channel Four, and then completed the Miramax Films / Scottish Arts Council funded My Life So Far, which was released worldwide in early 2000.
In November 1997, he assumed the responsibilities of British Film Commissioner succeeding Sir Sydney Samuelson, CBE a role he held until joining Framestore in December 2006. He had responsibility for all International production based in the UK, a total of some US $6 billion worth of production during his time as Film Commissioner. Steve Norris is currently Managing Director, Film at Framestore CFC.
